The 2020 Africa Think Tank Summit was organized by the African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD), in partnership with the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), and the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program (TTCSP) on 26 -28 February in Cape Town, South Africa.
The summit provided a platform for African think tanks and stakeholders - thinkers, policymakers and government representatives from all over the continent to discuss innovative ideas to strengthen the work of African think tanks.
Under the theme "Repositioning Africa's Think Tanks to realize the power and potential of partnerships in domestic policy and world politics," the event centered on issues around security, economic development, the rise of foreign investment and the future of African youth.
Dr. Chukwuka Onyekwena was on the panel session that discussed “The Role of Foreign Investment in Africa & its Impact on Development and National and Regional Sovereignty” while Dr. Chinny Ogunro moderated the session on “Balancing on the Head of a Pin: Managing the Employment and the Youth Dividends”.

Dr. Chukwuka Onyekwena joined other members of the Africa Policy Circle for the 12th edition of the APC Workshop on February 26, 2020 in Capetown South Africa. Discussions were centered on the role of Parliamentarism and Think Tanks

Dr. Adedeji Adeniran participated in a series of two workshops organized by Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), in partnership with the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), on February 2-3, 2020 in Cape Town. The workshops were targeted at policymakers, experts and academics and aim to generate ideas and recommendations that will result in concrete actions towards a more resilient and prosperous Africa.

The first event, “ New Frontiers in Local Content: Environment and Transparency ”, featured presentations on different topics such as Incorporating Environmental Standards in Local Procurement, Extractives Procurement and Carbon Emissions, Environment and Local Procurement in Extractive Industries.

The second event, “Advocacy and Africa’s New Climate Economy: Evidence-based Action” provided a platform for participants to share perspectives from their respective think tanks. In his presentation, Dr. Adeniran highlighted how economic diversification can contribute to climate change mitigation as well as reduce the cost of climate finance.

Dr. Chinny Ogunro participated in the WinterSchool for ThinkTankers 2020, which held from Feb 2-8 2020, in Geneva, Switzerland. The Think Tank Hub, in collaboration with On Think Tanks and Foraus – Swiss Forum on Foreign Policy, organized the 4th edition of the Winter School for Think Tankers, from 2-8 February 2020 in Geneva. The training provided a platform for think tank leaders to develop their understanding of think tanks and to prepare themselves for a future as policy change-makers. Participants were also tutored by a range of professionals during the training period.

RISE Nigeria Team Members, Dr. Dozie Okoye and Mma Amara Ekeruche attended a 2-day Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE) conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. At the workshop, updates on the RISE projects (being implemented in seven countries including Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Vietnam, Tanzania and Nigeria) which aims to shed light on how systems of education can address the global learning crisis, were shared.
For the RISE Country Research in Nigeria, the team will focus on examining the role of parents’ aspirations for their children’s education, and parents’ and communities’ engagement with schools. The aim is to see whether and how the demand for improved learning drives educational systems change in Nigeria. The research agenda will also analyse key historical developments that have shaped educational outcomes in the country.
