CSEA Participates in Second High-Level Conference on Education in Emergencies (EiE) in West Africa

The Centre for the Study of the Economies of Africa (CSEA) participated in the second high-level regional conference focused on advancing educational solutions for out-of-school children in emergencies, fragile, conflict, and violence-affected (FCV) settings in West Africa. The 2-day event was held in Accra, Ghana, from 29th to  30th September, 2026.

The conference brought together policymakers, researchers, education practitioners, innovators, development partners, and other key stakeholders from across West Africa to examine evidence, share experiences, and explore scalable approaches to addressing the persistent challenge of out-of-school children in crisis-affected settings.

Representing CSEA at the conference were Dr Adedeji Adeniran (Director of Research) and Tikristini Olawale (Research Associate), who contributed to discussions on the challenges and opportunities for strengthening education systems and expanding access to learning for children affected by conflict, displacement, and other emergencies.

As part of the conference sessions, Dr Adedeji gave a presentation on the ‘Cost of Not Investing in Out-of-School Children and Education in Emergency across West Africa’. The presentation highlighted the consequences of educational exclusion for individuals, communities, and economies and emphasised the need to scale up investments in out-of-school children and youth across West Africa.

This high-level conference is part of the GPE KIX/IDRC funded project on ‘Advancing Education Solutions: Research for Scaling Education Innovations in Emergencies and Fragile, Conflict-and Violence-Affected Areas of Burkina Faso, Ghana and Nigeria’.
