CSEA co-hosts the 7th Africa Emerging Markets Forum with CBN and the Emerging Markets Forum

The Centre for the Study of the Economies of Africa (CSEA), in collaboration with the Emerging Markets Forum (EMF) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) , co-hosted the 7th Africa Emerging Markets Forum in Abuja from July 29–30, 2026.

The two-day event held under the theme, “Building Resilience Amidst Geoeconomic Uncertainties,” brought together policymakers, economists, business leaders, development experts and other stakeholders to explore how African economies can respond to a rapidly changing global environment. Discussions covered geopolitical tensions, shifting trade patterns, climate change, technological disruption and tightening global financial conditions, with a focus on strengthening macroeconomic stability, productive capacity and investment.

Regional integration and technological transformation were central to the conversations. Participants discussed the importance of accelerating the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), strengthening regional value chains and reducing dependence on external markets. They also underscored the potential of digitalisation and artificial intelligence to improve productivity and competitiveness, while emphasising the need for investment in infrastructure, skills and policy frameworks to support these opportunities.

A key highlight of the Forum was a high-level dialogue between CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso and WTO Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, which examined the changing global economic landscape and the steps needed to strengthen Africa’s competitiveness.

Participants also highlighted the need for stronger partnerships among governments, the private sector, development finance institutions and research organisations to address Africa’s infrastructure, financing and productivity gaps. Building resilience, they noted, requires sustained efforts to strengthen institutions, diversify economies, deepen regional integration and create conditions for inclusive and sustainable growth.
