The Executive Director of the Centre for the Study of the Economies of Africa, Dr. Chukwuka Onyekwena, joined global experts at the 26th Rencontres Économiques d'Aix-en-Provence, held from July 2 - 4, 2026, in France.
Dr. Onyekwena participated in a panel discussion titled “Technological Progress and Employment: Should We Fear AI?”, which examined how artificial intelligence is reshaping labour markets, redefining skills, and influencing the future of work.
During the discussion, Dr. Chukwuka noted that AI is most likely to automate routine, repetitive, and predictable tasks, while roles that require human interaction, creativity, and physical dexterity, may be less susceptible to automation.
He also highlighted the potential for AI to create new opportunities, pointing to emerging roles such as AI governance specialists, data scientists, and cybersecurity analysts, which are expected to become increasingly important.
