CSEA Attends Civil Society Meeting by CISLAC

On May 20, 2026, the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), with support from Tax Justice Network Africa (TJNA), convened a high-level Civil Society Organizations (CSO) meeting in Keffi, Nasarawa State, to review Nigeria’s Tobacco Tax Regime and develop a unified position paper aimed at advancing effective tobacco control policies nationwide.  Halimat Abdulrazaq represented the Centre for the Study of the Economies of Africa (CSEA).

The engagement brought together civil society leaders, policy advocates, and public health experts to critically examine gaps in the current taxation framework, assess the public health implications of tobacco consumption, and strengthen collective advocacy for a more responsive, health-driven tax system.

Participants also collaboratively developed a communiqué containing actionable recommendations for government and relevant stakeholders, aimed at reducing tobacco consumption, protecting public health, and strengthening governance outcomes.
