The 2022 Evaluating Social Programs training organized by JPAL Africa, featured a five-day course on evaluating social programs aimed at providing a thorough understanding of randomized evaluations and pragmatic step-by-step training for conducting one’s own evaluation.
Participants from nine African countries, including researchers and practitioners were in attendance. The training provided a platform for participants to understand why and when a rigorous evaluation of social impact is required, how randomized evaluations are designed in real-world settings, how to maximize policy impact and assess the generalisability of research findings, and to join a community of practice with other decision-makers who can provide support in the design and use of impact evaluations.
CSEA’s Executive Director, Dr Chukwuka Onyekwena was a facilitator in one of the sessions; while Emeka Nweke, Research Associate at CSEA was a participant in this training.
Centre for the Study of the Economies of Africa (CSEA), in collaboration with the Trade Facilitation Office (TFO) Canada organized the 3rd Multi-Stakeholder Forum on Women in Trade (WIT) titled “Strengthening Women in trade in the African Region.” The hybrid session featured presentations to disseminate findings from its qualitative and quantitative research for women in International trade. Stakeholders from Senegal and Madagascar, provided insights and suggestions on policy implications that would support more inclusion of women and address the binding constraints to women empowerment in domestic and international trade. The event was held in Terrou-Bi Resort Darkar Senegal on July 19, 2022.
The Centre for the Study of the Economies of Africa hosted a hybrid presentation as part of our Bi-monthly seminar in collaboration with African School of Economics. The presentation featured the recent Nigeria development update released by the World Bank in June.
The speakers were Gloria Joseph-Raji (Senior Economist) and Miguel Saldaraigga (Country Economist) from The World Bank. The presentation highlighted improved growth prospects for the year in tandem with the previous update. However, inflationary, fiscal and foreign exchange pressures have increased considerably leaving the economy more vulnerable.
The presenters also identified the possibilities of lower revenue irrespective of higher oil prices. This is a consequence of larger petrol subsidy and lower production.
To address these key challenges, the report recommended three priorities including reducing inflation, addressing fiscal pressure, and catalyzing private investment to boost job creation.

Last week, we participated in the 2022 RISE annual conference. The RISE Programme applies systems thinking to education to understand why learning outcomes in a school, district, or country are poor, and why the conditions causing these low learning levels to exist.
The two-day conference was held at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford, UK. Attendees also joined the proceedings virtually and in-person at the regional conference hub in Abuja, Nigeria. The conference covered a range of themes under the broad umbrella of education systems thinking.
It drew on research undertaken in RISE countries—Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Tanzania, and Vietnam—as well as other developing countries. The event featured eight research sessions and one invited panel session.
The Centre for the Study of the Economies of Africa (CSEA) has emerged winner of the RISE Capacity Development Award for its work on the Learning Trajectories Training.
To celebrate the amazing achievements of the Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE) community in supporting education systems in developing countries to overcome the learning crisis, the Research on Improving Systems of Education designed three ROscar (RISE Oscar) awards that capture the three areas in which the RISE community has created the most impact: i) capability development impact (ii) academic impact and (iii) overall impact.
CSEA emerged winner RISE Capacity Development Award for its outstanding work on Learning Trajectories.
What are Learning Trajectories?
Learning trajectories (often referred to as learning profiles) show how much children learn over time in a particular context. Where most efforts to measure learning focus on what children know at one point in time, usually through an assessment late in the schooling cycle, learning trajectories trace out the process of learning as children progress through school.
Learning trajectories can help us better understand and visualise the learning crisis. They can also simulate the potential impact of different policies on learning and can inform what education systems should prioritise to address the learning crisis.
For its Learning Trajectories Training, CSEA organized a two-day intensive workshop on “New tools for understanding learning crisis in Nigeria”.
