The policy dialogue on Job Creation Strategies in Nigeria was organised by the Centre for the Study of the Economies of Africa (CSEA) in collaboration with Nextier Advisory with support from International Development and Research Center (IDRC) in Abuja, Nigeria on May 15, 2014. The dialogue tagged Job Creation Strategies in Nigeria was organised to discuss the potentials and challenges of job creation and employment generation in both the private and public sectors in Nigeria. Participants from government, Policymakers, researchers, Civil Society Organisations, the academia and media were represented.
The aim of the policy dialogue was to discuss findings from a research study carried out by CSEA titled Job Creation and Employment in Nigeria. The dialogue provided a platform for participants to draw out points from the research findings using existing policies, the state of unemployment and what employment generation strategies can be put to effective use in the country as a basis for discussion. It also allowed for a critical review of programs and policy initiatives of government identify the challenges of employment generation in the private sectors and most importantly provide recommendations on how to improve and sustain job creation strategy in Nigeria.
The dialogue was held in two sessions; the paper presentation examined employment generation and the constraints of job creation in Nigeria. The first session with a panel of five discussants, brought to the fore the challenges of Job Creation in Agriculture and Manufacturing sectors and allowed for a critical review of what strategies should be put in place for the development of these sectors. The second session featured four discussants that identified the role of the public sector in Job Creation with further discussions and recommendations from stakeholders and experts from government and the academia. Each session was followed by a Question and Answer session with an extended debate and recommendations from various participants.
