On July 12, 2023, the Southern Voice and the United Nations Foundation convened participants in New York, on the sidelines of the 2023 High-Level Political Forum for the "Balancing Urgency and Inclusion: Lessons from Policy Responses to the Pandemic across the Global South for the 2030 Agenda" event.
The meeting provided a platform for participants to reflect on lessons learned through the pandemic in Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean, on how to navigate urgency while ensuring positive outcomes for all.
Our Executive Director, Dr Chukwuka Onyekwena in his presentation, discussed the urgency-inclusion balance for pandemic policy responses.

On 22nd and 23rd June 2023, we hosted the Nigerian Economics Student's Association, University of Abuja and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka chapters for an educational visit at the Centre.
The event featured presentations by the Executive Director, Dr. Chukwuka Onyekwena; Nigeria’s Ambassador to Burundi, H.E., Elijah Onyeagba, Ph.D; CSEA’s Director of Research, Dr. Adedeji Adeniran; visiting Academic Professor, Emmanuel O. Nwosu and the Head of Communications, Drusilla David.
There were also sessions led by the Centre’s researchers, which provided a platform for peer learning and networking.
CSEA founder and Director General of the World Trade Organisation Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, received the 2023 Kiel Institute for the World Economy Prize, alongside Professor Leonard Wantchekon and Dr. Eleni Gabre-Madhin on June 19, 2023.
The notable Global Economy Prize honours the recipients for their outstanding achievements and commitment to Africa's sustainable development.
Dr. Okonjo Iweala was also awarded an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Glasgow in recognition of her contributions in the field of Economics and policy on the 14th of June 2023.
On June 21, 2023, CSEA hosted stakeholders from the tobacco policy space in Nigeria to discuss findings from our research in our latest policy brief titled 'The Role of States in Tobacco Control Nigeria'.
This research is conducted with support from Cancer Research Uk (CRUK) in partnership with Development Gateway.
This policy brief underscores the importance of state involvement in tobacco control efforts and provides evidence-based recommendations, utilizing the WHO MPOWER framework, to assist state governments in Nigeria, in effectively implementing tobacco control policies and programs to protect their residents from the harmful consequences of tobacco use.
The event held at CSEA Conference hall in Abuja, Nigeria, featured presentations from CSEA research team and Development Gateway.
There were also breakout sessions where participants had in-depth discussions, knowledge transfer, sharing of experiences, as well as the administration of a tool kit that will serve as a guide for further discussions in other states, specifically on how to implement global best practices on tobacco control.
The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) with support from the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI) hosted the second regional stakeholders’ forum on sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) tax, for stakeholders in the South-South region of Nigeria.
The regional consultation seeks to expand national discourse on tackling the public health impact of over consumption of SSBs and galvanize stakeholders’ broader acceptance of the SSB tax and sustainable public health financing.
Additionally, the meeting also sought to establish consensus for a policy agenda on SSB tax implementation and propose strategies for its improved execution. CSEA’s Research Associate, Augustine Iraoya joined other key stakeholders at the meeting which was held on June 15, 2023 in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
