Tobacco Control: CSEA organizes Capacity Development workshops in five states

CSEA in partnership with Cancer Research UK and Development Gateway and the Federal Ministry of Health conducted a multistate Capacity Development Workshop on Tobacco Control in five states (Oyo, Rivers, Enugu, Gombe and Kano).

The workshop was designed to provide a platform for stakeholders in the tobacco sector to discuss findings from CSEA’s latest research titled “Nigeria Tobacco Policy Landscape: The Role of States in Tobacco Control”.

The workshops consisted of various sessions which included: presentations of the research brief and the MPOWER framework as well as a practical session on how to use the the toolkit on tobacco control developed by CSEA’s Research team and a demonstration of the Tobacco Control Data Initiative (TCDI) dashboard on the Development Gateway platform.

The group break out sessions provided a platform for participants to discuss various issues around tobacco based on prevalence, taxation, Tobacco harm, industry interference, illicit trade, and shisha.

Stakeholders were drawn from across various institutions including the states Ministries of Health and Environment, the Nigerian Customs Service and other Non-governmental Organisations.

CSEA participates in the 2023 UKFIET Conference

CSEA’s Director of Research, Dr Adedeji Adeniran, participated in 2023 UKFIET conference which brought together scholars and practitioners in the field of international education, training, and learning for diverse and critical dialogue and debate on ways forward in this crucial field of research and practice. The Conference which was held under the theme Education for Social & Environmental Justice was held at the University of Oxford Examination Schools, Oxford, UK., from September 12 to 14, 2023.

Aligning Nigeria’s Debt Reduction Policies with Gender and Climate Goals

CSEA in collaboration with the Brookings Africa Growth Initiative and funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC)convened experts and stakeholders at dissemination event titled “Towards Reconciling Economic and Debt Management Policies with Gender and Climate Objectives in Nigeria,” in Abuja on Wednesday, September 6 2023, to deliberate research findings from a three-fold report that shed light on fundamental fiscal policy options for growing out debt in Nigeria.

CSEA hosts its founder Dr. Ngozi-Okonjo-Iweala

CSEA hosted its founder, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on Wednesday, August 9, 2023 at a breakfast session in Abuja Nigeria, together with the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Nigeria Mr. Cui Jianchun; Ambassador of the Czech Republic in Nigeria, H.E. Zdeněk KREJČÍ;  Lukas Schifferle, Deputy Head of Mission at Embassy of Switzerland in Nigeria; and Topias Tamminen Deputy Head of Mission at Embassy of Finland in Nigeria.

Also at the meeting was the Executive Director of CSEA, Dr. Chukwuka Onyekwena, the CEO of NOIPolls, Dr Chike Nwangwu and CSEA’s Director of Research, Dr. Adedeji Adeniran.

Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala also received the Nigerians in the Diaspora Icon award from the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), presented by the CEO of NIDCOM , Hon. Abike Dabiri Erewa.

CSEA participates in the Think20 Summit in India

CSEA’s Executive Director, Dr. Chukwuka Onyekwena, joined other high-level delegates and policy experts from around the world for the Think20 (T20) Summit in Mysuru, India, from July 21 to August 2, 2023.

The T20 is an official engagement group of the G20 and serves as an “ideas bank” for the G20 by bringing together think tanks and high-level experts to deliberate on relevant policy issues.The event featured several conversations on key policy issues such as macroeconomics and trade, digital transformation, lifestyle for environment, green transition, global financial order, accelerating SDGs and reforming multilateralism.

The Summit also featured the release of the final T20 communique and Task Force Statements, which encapsulates the key recommendations and policy proposals developed by the Task Forces – through a year-long process – for the G20 Leaders’ Communique.
