CSEA and its partners – Southern Voice and Group for the Analysis of Development (GRADE) – are organizing a webinar on “Edtech Landscape in Africa: The Progress, Problem and Pathway to Inclusive Education” to understand where EdTech is in Africa, the challenges bedeviling its development and how research can help in the developing world. This webinar will bring together stakeholders to dialogue on inclusive ways to adopt technology in classrooms to address learning crisis in Africa.

In the webinar, we will also be disseminating the findings of our research on EdTech’s landscape in Africa. The study examined the adoption of EdTech in primary and junior secondary education in Sub- Saharan Africa (SSA), particularly in 10 selected countries including Nigeria, South Africa, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Cameroon, Benin, Malawi, and Senegal.

The Centre for the Study of the Economies of Africa (CSEA), in collaboration with the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), is organising a sensitization workshop titled “Understanding New Nigerian Labour Force Statistics".

The workshop aims to acquaint stakeholders, including government officials, the private sector, civil society organizations, and the public with the most recent Nigerian Labour Force Statistics and its implications for policy and programme development. 

The event will also equip participants with the right tools and skills to interpret, visualise and analyse labour force data for data-driven and evidence-based decision-making.

The Gender and Responsible Artificial Intelligence Network (GRAIN) consortium, together with CSEA(Nigeria), IPAR (Senegal) and SUNBIRD IA (Uganda) is pleased to invite you to the online launch of the GRAIN Network on November 20 and 21, 2023 at 10am GMT on the Zoom platform.

GRAIN is an initiative that aims to promote gender equality and Responsible Artificial Intelligence, highlighting the importance of creating a world where every person, regardless of gender, has the power to bring about positive and sustainable change.

This event will provide a platform for participants to discover the objectives of the GRAIN network, its current and future projects, as well as opportunities for collaboration.

The World Trade Organisation (WTO) has confirmed the appointment of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the seventh Director-General of the organization.

Her appointment was announced on 15 February 2021 after the General Council of the WTO agreed by consensus to select Dr. Okonjo-Iweala to head the organization.

When she takes office on 1 March 2021, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala will become the first woman and the first African to be chosen as Director-General with a renewable term on 31 August 2025.

Until her appointment as the DG for the WTO, Dr. Okonjo Iweala is a senior adviser at Lazard and serves on the boards of the Rockefeller Foundation, Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation, GAVI and the Center for Global Development, among others. She is also the chair of African Risk Capacity, a specialised agency of the African Union to help member states prepare for and respond to extreme weather events and natural disasters.

She is a globally renowned development economist and former Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance of Nigeria. She was also a past Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria in 2006 and has also held several key positions at the World Bank, including Managing Director (October 2007-2011).

Dr Okonjo-Iweala is the founder of the Centre for the Economies of Africa (CSEA) and currently sits as the Chairperson of the Board.

CSEA participated in the TTI Exchange 2018 (TTIX), held in Pullman Bangkok King Power Hotel, on 12 – 14 November 2018. The event focused on the theme Sustainable Organisations for Sustainable Development:  Into the Future – How Can Think Tanks Continue to Contribute to Building More Equitable and Prosperous Societies?.

For a decade, the Think Tank Initiative (TTI) has continued to provide organizational and capacity support for 43 policy research institutions in 20 developing countries. The TTIX also brought together representatives of thinktanks, policymakers, donors, and other research-to-policy actors for a final Exchange to mark the last year of the program.

CSEA was represented by Executive Director, Dr. Chukwuka Onyekwena; Senior Research fellow, Dr. Adedeji Adeniran; Research Fellow, Precious Chukwuemelie Akanonu; Research Associate, Joseph Ishaku and Communications/Institutional Advncement Officer, Drusilla David. The team participated in various strategic sessions, with Dr. Onyekwena as a topic Convener in the session on Think tank strategies in policy windows. Precious Akanonu facilitated CSEA’s booth at the Think Tanks Making a Difference: A Market Place to showcase CSEA research, policy engagement, and outreach.

On Think Tanks –Think Tank Initiative (OTT-TTI) Young Leaders

Joseph Ishaku and Drusilla David were among 24 Young Leaders who were selected for the first stage of the 2018 OTT-TTI Fellowship Programme. They joined other young leaders at the TTIX, to participate in the various sessions, which also provided opportunities for them to attend specific workshops and have mentorship opportunities. The OTT-TTI Fellowship is a partnership between TTI and On Think Tanks (OTT) to support the leadership capabilities among the new generation of think tankers, and to help them in becoming real agents of change.

Southern Voice Conference

CSEA also participated in the Southern Voice Conference which held subsequently, on November 15 and 16, 2018 in Bangkok. The meeting convened think tank experts from around the globe to discuss the network’s current and future agenda on policy issues related to sustainable development and the 2030 Agenda. CSEA team was represented by Dr. Chukwuka Onyekwena, Dr. Adedeji Adeniran and Drusilla David.

The issues of focus included cross-cutting themes for the implementation of the SDGs, relevant to all countries and policy areas for the topics: ensuring no one is left behind, dealing with synergies and trade-offs among different policy areas of the 2030 agenda, exploring the connections between global and national policies, and promoting effective development cooperation.

This conference also included a workshop among communication experts from the network to plan outreach and communication strategies for the flagship initiative “State of the SDGs“.
